FARISH STREET AREA CHURCHES COME TOGETHER

TO PROMOTE HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Shalom: A Day of Health and Wellness

The Farish Street Community of Shalom (FSCS) will Sponsor Shalom: A Day of Health and Wellness, October 24, 2009 in the historic Farish Street District. The day long event will seek to promote a healthy lifestyle for all by offering access to health education. There will be informational seminars and health screenings in several areas including high blood pressure, HIV and diabetes, major health concerns for African-Americans.

The day will begin with a 5K Run-Walk/1 mile Fun Run and community prayer breakfast. Along with the Health Fair, there will be a basketball challenge between area churches and an old fashioned block party. Registration for the 5K Run-Walk is $10 per participant, which includes a free pedometer and t-shirt for early registrants. Early registration ends October 10.

The FSCS is a nonprofit community development corporation that seeks to improve the quality of life for the people primarily in the historic Farish Street District, through building community relationships, emphasizing health and wellness and promoting economic development.

The Society of St. Andrew - is in desperate need of volunteers for gleaning opportunities.  The amount of food available in these fields is huge and left unpicked will rot.  This produce can help feed hungry Mississippians.  In a recent meeting I had with the Executive Director of The Mississippi Food Network, he stated this time last year they were serving 60,000 Mississippians per month and now they are servicing 100,000 per month.

Is the work hot?  Yes.  Is the work dirty?  Yes.  Are the fields wet and muddy?  Yes.  Are people in our very own state not getting enough food to eat?  YES!!  Can you make a difference?  YES!!

The following is a list of opportunities to glean throughout the state.

  1. Blueberries-Purvis, MS-available now and for the next two weeks.
  2. Blueberries-Lumberton, MS-available now and for the next two weeks.
  3. Blueberries-Tylertown, MS-available now and for the next two weeks.
  4. Watermelons-Port Gibson, MS-available now and for several weeks.
  5. Sweet Corn-Indianola, MS-available now but will be ending shortly.
  6. Squash, Okra, Zucchini, Purple Hull Peas-available now until squash quits producing.

If anyone is interested in helping with our efforts to fight hunger in our state, please do not hesitate to call me to get more specific information about the gleaning opportunities listed above.  Jackie Usey, Program Coordinator Mississippi, Gleaning Network Society of St. Andrew - P.O. Volunteers are vital on the Gulf Coast

To schedule a work team to help heal hearts and homes in Mississippi, please call 866-435-7091 or e-mail disastercenter@meridianumc.org. To check the schedules at our host sites or get forms, waivers, and other information about bringing a team, call us.

You may or may not be able to come and serve alongside us in a physical way on the Mississippi Gulf Coast . You can, however, stand with us in prayer. This is the most important support of the ministry of healing hearts and homes.

Here are some of many ways you can pray with us:

bulletPray for our volunteers. Pray that they make themselves available, flexible, and willing to do God's work, whether it is swinging a hammer or lending an ear.  Pray that they drive and work safely.
bulletPray for our host site coordinators. These are people who have come to live on the coast to manage volunteers and work at our campsites. Pray that they can be organized and energetic. Pray that they experience God's love through volunteers and homeowners and never get tired of working for God.
bulletPray for case managers and construction coordinators. These people assist the homeowners before volunteers ever arrive. Pray that God would give them compassionate hearts as they see people in desperate and despairing places. Pray that God would grant them wisdom to help homeowners in the best way they can.
bulletPray for homeowners whom we assist. Pray they will see God in a volunteer, a site coordinator, a case manager, or a construction coordinator. Pray that they will see God's justice, mercy, and love. Pray that they won't lose hope.
bulletPray for our management staff. Pray they will be servant leaders. Pray they will be responsible with and dedicated to the ministry God has entrusted to them.
bulletPray that this ministry will be financially stable. Pray we will trust God to provide.
bulletPray for all of the people who live along the Mississippi Gulf Coast . Pray for the reopening of businesses and the restoration of communities. Pray that local churches will be evidence of God's presence in the world. Pray that rescue and redemption will replace destruction and despair. Pray that God will be recognized as the One who heals hearts and homes.
